There’s nothing like homegrown food! Juicy tomatoes, crunchy cucumbers, aromatic herbs and sweet berries are what makes gardening worth every effort.
For some of us, bending and digging is harder than when we were younger. If that’s you too, one of the best ways to make gardening easier on the back is planting your herbs and veggies in raised garden beds.
There are several ways to create the garden beds:
- The simplest is to make a flatbed, where you just remove the grass and create a 5 x 10 or so bed. Then you create a mound of soil to create a raised garden. I like this because there’s no need for any other materials.
- You can use wood planks to build a raised bed
- Even logs can be used to create a raised garden bed.
Once you make your garden beds, add some dirt, a bit of compost and then plant your favorite vegetables. Remember to add some mulch after planting to keep moisture in and weeds out.
Taking care of a raised bed is easy. Because your raised garden is contained, you can better plan what to grow, weeding can be done a lot more comfortably, drainage is good, and you can control pests better too.
