Over the weekend, a Wyoming elk hunter, David Mossburg, found himself in a tense and strangely aggressive encounter with a coyote along the Wind River. Mossburg captured the entire standoff on video using his phone and shared the footage on YouTube. In a conversation with Cowboy State Daily on Monday, Mossburg detailed the encounter, revealing that he came close to shooting the coyote during the minutes-long standoff.
Residing in Riverton, Mossburg explained that he was hunting with his son on his brother-in-law’s property along the Wind River that day. Opting to increase their chances of spotting an elk, the two had separated. Armed with a shotgun loaded with slugs, Mossburg was positioned in a brushy gully near the river when he observed two coyotes approaching.

Addressing the coyote in the video, Mossburg said, “Yeah, what are you gonna do? Huh? I have a 12-gauge with a deer slug. Do you want me to shoot you? Why don’t you go with your buddy and live another day.”
The lone coyote responded by barking repeatedly, and Mossburg, reminding the creature of his lethal potential, considered taking a shot. In Wyoming, coyotes fall under the non-game species category, allowing for year-round hunting without bag limits or licenses.
